یکی از اصلیترین منابع برای حدس زدن اسکار دیدن لیست منتقدین چنین رسانههایی است. منتقدانی که در اکادمی اسکار هم حق رأی دارند و معمولا نتیجه به رأی آنها قرابت زیادی دارد. سال گذشته منتقدان واشنگتن The Washington DC Area Film Critics Association پنج فیلم مهلکه The Hurt Locker ، حرامزادههای بیآبرو Inglourious Basterds، بالا در آسمان Up in the Air ، ارزشمند Precious و انیمیشن بالا Up را برگزیدند که هر 5 فیلم کاندید بهترین فیلم اسکار شدند.
از نکات جالب توجه در بین نامزدها میتوان به انتخاب داستان اسباب بازی 3 Toy Story 3 در بین بهترین فیلم و همینطور بهترین انیمیشن سال اشاره کرد. این عمل دور از ذهن نیست و سال گذشته فیلم بالا Up هم در این نظرسنجی و هم اسکار در هر دو بخش کاندید بود.
